Supplies/Free Preview

This video is the preview video, so if you watched it before, there won't be anything new for you here.

What do you need for the is course?

Not much for the basic process!

This course will focus on the process of creating a (Blackout) "Tangled Out' Poetry piece with basic tools and materials (listed below). I'll be teaching some new tangles and discussing the evolution of Blackout Poetry from its origins to "Tangled Out" Poetry. I'll also offer resources for finding materials to "Tangle Out" with Zentangles! Read on for the Supplies info.

Basic Supplies

There are several options for this course, with the basic process requiring the basic tools. There is an option for adding color, which is discussed below.

You'll definitely need the following tools and supplies (or similar) for the basic process:

  1. Sakura Black Micron PN or 05 pen (or similar pen)
  2. Graphite Pencil (basically, a #2 pencil)
  3. White Charcoal Pencil
  4. 2 Tortillions (one for white charcoal and one for graphite)
  5. Pages of a favorite book (see below), or a printout of text provided upon course registration
  6. OPTIONAL: Sakura Black Micron 10, 12, or Graphic 1 (makes it easy to fill in spaces)
  7. OPITONAL: White Gel Pen (10 works well)

I do have these Basics kits available at the prices shown below.

Text to "Blackout" or "Tangleout" with Zentangles

You can use pages from any book to create a (Blackout) "Tangled Out" Zentangled Poetry piece. Simply rip the pages out as close to the middle of the book as you can and proceed with the process outlined in this course. Please note that the paper books are typically printed on are pretty thin, so your options for shading and adding color may be limited. On the positive side, if you choose a book that has a few years on it, it may have some nice paper color variations on the edges that will make an interesting piece. I will also discuss options for working with these pages in the course, and suggest a few books that I've used for "Tangleout" Poetry.

Another Option: Once you have enrolled, I will email you a .pdf of text that I wrote for this course. I'm providing this because almost every published book has a copyright protection that requires the author's permission to reproduce any portion of the book. Thus, even though we are using the text for artwork (not content), and we're going to pretty much obliterate most of this text, I need to abide by this copyright protection, and to advise you of it.

To get around this, I wrote a page of text for use in this course, and I will email you a link to the .pdf once you've registered for this course. This .pdf can be printed out on card stock or art paper if you have access to a printer that can handle art paper. The text can also be printed out by a printing company (such as FedEx) on almost any paper of your choosing for a nominal fee. You can also use plain old copier paper to learn the process, but like the pages in books, your shading and coloring options may be limited.

I will be using the text I'm sending you on Fabriano printer paper. This is the same paper used for Zentangle tiles. If you like, I can send you a 8.5"x11" piece of Fabriano paper with the text printed on it for the fee discussed below.

Optional: Adding Color

Some of the pieces I'll be showing do have color, and I'm using Prismacolor Pencils. If you already have Prismacolor pencils (or any other brand), that's great! I've listed the pencil colors I use below, and you can use whichever colors you already have if you don't have all of them.

If you don't have prismacolor pencils, I do have a small number of kits containing the colors listed below. Individual Prismacolor Pencils typcially cost $2.20 to $2.89, so to keep the cost down for my kits, I cut the pencils in half as shown in the Supplies Video, and I cut the cost in half. Please know that you can complete the course without using color at all. You could also use other coloring tools, like crayons, colored pens or pastels pencils. Watercolor is tricky, because pages from books might not have enough body or weight to withstand the water. Here are the 20 colors I'll be using:

Prismacolor Pencils:

  1. PC 1077 Colorless Blender
  2. PC935 Black
  3. PC938 White
  4. PC916 Canary Yellow
  5. PC1034 Goldenrod
  6. PC944 Terra Cotta
  7. PC918 Orange
  8. PC1001 Salmon Pink
  9. PC926 Carmin Red
  10. PC924 Crimson Red
  11. PC930 Magenta
  12. PC929 Pink
  13. PC932 Violet
  14. PC933 Violet Blue
  15. PC901 Indigo Blue
  16. PC103 Cerulean Blue
  17. PC908 Dark Green
  18. PC912 Apple Green
  19. PC992 Light Aqua
